Therizinosaur study: bamboo forest

Description

Bamboo forests first appeared during the late Cretaceous in a land that would one day become Asia. The tough grass could have provided a fairly stable niche for an animal with the right tools... this is speculative, of course, but Therizinosaurs were rather well-equipped to deal with bamboo. Larger species like Therizinosaurus could have tackled even the tallest shoots, and used their claws and teeth to strip the leaves rather efficiently, and their huge guts would have been adequate to digest the foliage.

Since these creatures would not have been the fastest, I have given a more camoflagued look - long, rough feathers are dark in colour (bar the seasonal display crest and occasional light feathers on the tail and arms) and also have become a home to various algae, fungi, and small invertebrates in a manner similar to the way modern tree sloths become home to such organisms.

This is only a study, and I've had it lying around for a while waiting to be finished. Enjoy!

Where did you read that bamboo was around in the late Cretaceous? I really like the idea of dinosaurs eating bamboo, but I thought bamboo appeared ~40 mya, well after the non-avian dinosaurs died out.
